Andrew J Harford
Andrew Harford is a Principal Research Scientist and Team Leader of the Water and Sediment Quality (WASQ) team at the Office of the Supervising Scientist. He leads a multidisciplinary team that protects the Alligator Rivers Region from the impacts of uranium mining through environmental monitoring, ecotoxicology and ecological risk assessment.
His team delivers integrated aquatic monitoring programs that combine field biomonitoring, laboratory toxicity testing and environmental chemistry to assess and predict environmental impacts, supporting the development of water and sediment quality standards, environmental regulation and mine rehabilitation.
Andrew also leads research into next-generation assessment tools, including environmental genomics, artificial intelligence, automated image analysis and novel bioassays. Beyond the Ranger mine, he collaborates with government, industry and academic partners to advance ecotoxicology and environmental risk assessment in mining, freshwater and tropical marine environments across Australia and internationally.
