Catherine K King
Cath is a Principal Research Scientist at the Australian Antarctic Division in Tasmania. She is an Environmental Scientist with over 30 years’ experience in the field of ecotoxicology and environmental risk assessment, and has been involved in Antarctic research for 20 years. Cath leads, designs and implements multidisciplinary research on the impacts of human activities and the effects of environmental stressors including locally derived contaminants and globally transported pollutants on marine and terrestrial communities in Antarctica. Much of her research has focused on determining the sensitivity of native species to contaminants of concern including metals and hydrocarbons, with the ultimate aim of developing site-specific Environmental Quality Guidelines and Remediation Targets for waters, soils and sediments in Antarctica and sub-Antarctic regions. This research directly contributes to evidenced-based decision making for policy, operations, infrastructure and station redevelopment, and informs best-practice management and protection of the Antarctic environment.
