Wide spatial and temporal variability in water and sediment quality is a natural feature of highly ephemeral, mineralized environments. This variability is explored in the context of several mining precincts in Queensland, and the legal structure (Environmental Authority) employed for regulatory compliance. Particular attention is given to the definition of referential / background conditions applicable to these environments.
